Virginia was born in Newton Centre, Massachusetts, August 30th 1909. Her family moved to San Diego California when she was 8, but eventually she moved back to Massachusetts to attend art school in Boston. She wrote and illustrated many children’s books including Mike Muligan and His Steam Shovel, and The Little House, both of which we have in our collection at Meadville Public Library! The Little House was awarded the Caldecott Award in 1943, but we have found that many of her books are classic tales of hope, endurance and encouragement.
