Mildred Taylor and Robert McCloskey share birthdays this week!

Mildred D. Taylor, (Sept. 13th.) won the Newbery Medal for her book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry in 1977. This book was a sequel to Song of the Trees and was also the inagural wining book of the NSK Neustadt Prize for Children’s Literature in 2003. Happy Birthday, Virginia Lee Burton!

Virginia was born in Newton Centre, Massachusetts, August 30th 1909. Her family moved to San Diego California when she was 8, but eventually she moved back to Massachusetts to attend art school in Boston. She wrote and illustrated many children’s books including Mike Muligan and His Steam Shovel, and The Little House, both of which we have in our collection at Meadville Public Library! Hey everyone! Look out! Our librarian Ms. Susan is making waves in her little speed boat. It’s summertime and some of you might be thinking about fun and adventure on a river, a lake or ocean.
