Patrons Drive 2009
Dear Friend,
In hard times, people depend on libraries more than ever. The Meadville Public Library is no exception. More than 241,000 items were borrowed during the past year – an increase of nearly 10,500 items over the previous year. The number of people visiting the library has increased as well. More than 15,000 people visit the library each month seeking free access to books, movies, music, magazines and computers. This increased demand comes at a time when state funding for public libraries has been cut by more than 20%. Ironically, at a time when our library is busier than ever, we may be forced to reduce services and hours to levels of 30 years ago.
As a result of the budget crisis and the state of the economy, our library budget is facing a cutback of $88,000, or 10% of our revenue. Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, we are able to continue to purchase books funded through the Patrons Drive and memorial gifts.
This year’s Patrons Drive is unlike any in our history. In order to further cut costs, we are using supplies left over from previous years’ Patrons Drives and printing other materials in-house. Additionally, we plan to send plastic cardholders only to donors who request them. Because of the rising cost of postage, we ask for your further generosity in providing your own stamp when you return your donation.
Please give generously to the 42nd Annual Patrons Drive. Your donation will make a significant difference in very challenging times. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Mr. Robert Snyder
Board President
P.S. All donations will be used to purchase new materials.
