He has won the Caldecott Medal for The Grandfather’s Journey, a Caldecott Honor and the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for The Boy of the Three-Year Nap written by Dianne Snyder, and his books have been chosen as Reading Rainbow selections, American Library Association Notable Children’s Books and New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Books of the Year. ” His novel The Ink-Keeper’s Apprentice is based on his own boyhood in Japan.
